Back-to-school blues

Dear Editor,

It is that time of the year again when schools reopen for the new academic year. It is the time of the year when all the educational headaches are felt by school administrators from basic school to the tertiary level institutions and by parents, second only tor GSAT time.

Despite all the expectations of starting or returning to school, there has always been a level of underpreparation by both administrators and parents which causes students to suffer. In some cases they are prevented from entering the school or attending classes if allowed to enter.

Even with the best intentions, parents will find it very difficult balancing the various purchases and payments they will have to make for their children to start school. Similarly, school administrations have to be prepared to accept students who have not fully sorted out their academic arrangements with the institution.

Certainly, all arrangements will never be sorted out for the first week of school and, therefore, I suggest that parents are given until the end of the month to have things regularised.

School administrators contribute to the difficulties parents and students face as, in the case of sixth formers, the schools take an inordinately long time to confirm their acceptance and this affects the parents' ability to make payment arrangements.

Can we all sit and work out things in the best interest of the students, after all, the children are the future.
