Don't stop the 77-year PNP progress

Dear Editor,

This weekend the People's National Party (PNP) will be having their annual conference and will celebrate their 77th birthday. I would like to say, Happy Birthday, and long may you be in Government.

As a very proud, but humble member of this great movement, I would like to remind us of some of the many things that have been done for the upliftment of Jamaicans. When Norman Manley led the PNP to victory in 1955, one of the first things he did was to make sure that all Jamaicans would be able to attend secondary school, by passing the Common Entrance Law. Under the PNP Government titles were granted to ordinary Jamaicans so they could own a little piece of the rock. Once upon a time only urban areas were given electricity, but under the PNP Government Jamaicans from all walks of life were given the opportunity to 'see the light' with the implementation of the Rural Electrification Programme. In the year 2014, the great USA had just then given women the right to be paid equally as men for similar tasks done. This was a law enforced by the PNP Government from the 1970s. When the PNP formed the Government in 1972, one of the first things that they did was to remove the mandatory 18-month sentence for those found in possession of a marijuana cigarette. Come again 2015, the decriminalisation of small quantities of marijuana.

It is said that Jamaica grows some of the best marijuana, due to its medicinal properties and many other uses. I definitely believe marijuana has a bright future and could benefit our economy immensely in time to come, but it's a process.

From time immemorial, the PNP has been about progress. As we celebrate our 77th year, it is still all about progress. Don't stop the progress.
