Holness — the Caribbean's Obama

Dear Editor,

I was very happy I take the time and endure the New York traffic to hear Andrew Holness speak at the Medgar Evers College. If his speech and presence is anything to go by, Jamaica has the Caribbean Obama on their hands.

He told the average-sized crowd gathered that his mission was to move Jamaica from poverty to prosperity. Jamaica was not destined to be poor, he said. Quoting from Jeremiah he added: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." He said that Jamaica has to let go of the poor way of thinking and embrace its true destiny of prosperity.

I was particularly impressed by his plan to create a Diaspora Service Corps similar to the US Peace Corps, but specifically geared to second- and third-generation Jamaicans who would want to give of their time and knowledge and strengthen their ties to their homeland. As a retired special education teacher I would love to give back to the country of my birth in a structured way.

Holness certainly has the ideas to transform Jamaica, and from all that I have read about his work in the education sector, he also has the ability to execute. The question is, are Jamaicans ready for their Obama?
