Dear Editor,
Billionaire Donald Trump wants Americans to believe that he will build a wall that keeps Mexicans out of the US but that he will negotiate a deal that will force the Mexican Government to pay for the wall. In Jamaica, the Minister of National Security Peter Bunting is trying to convince us that David Cameron's Government, along with the Jamaican Government, will build a new prison and it will not cost Jamaican taxpayers one red cent to maintain. Are they both trying to pull a fast one.
It costs British taxpayers £362 million to cage 10,649 foreign national prisoners, including killers, rapists and terrorists. Cameron, in campaigning, made a promise to British citizens to remove this excruciating pain from them. So he came to Jamaica, after travelling 5,000 miles, to tell us that he was working on a deal with the Portia Simpson Miller Administration to build a new prison.
No Government wants to have it on their record that during their time in office they built a prison. Governments like to be remembered for building hospitals, houses, bridges, roads, schools, etc, certainly not prisons no matter how modern.
If Cameron or the British Government had, over the years, donated a dam, school, hospital or an highway, no one would have quarrelled if they tried to 'sweeten' the deal. But a prison to ease his taxpayesr' burden, this is a bitter pill to swallow -- and no mention of reparation! It takes a spoonful of sugar to make the bitter medicine go down.
Cameron's demeanour spelled arrogance. He came across as cold and aloof. No "What a gwaan, Jamaica" or even a "big up, UWI"; even though he spoke of other grants, all everyone remembers is that prison and that we should "move on". The British Government is facing a public relations nightmare of their own making.
But this is Anancy country, and Bunting seems confident that he can pull a rabbit out of a hat or build a prison and ensure that someone else pays for it. He may need to give Donald Trump a collect call to pull this one off. Cameron couldn't dare wait to see if the Jamaica Labour Party might win, as this would throw a spanner in the works, this deal has to take place when the People's Naitonal Party is in power.
