Dear Editor,
With the JEEP stalling, Christmas roadside work apart, the arrival of the RICKSHAW is being touted by the government as the light at the end of the tunnel while heading over the financial cliff.
Having nearly completed the tiled sidewalk beside the Mike Henry Retirement Highway, between Harbour View and the Norman Manley (remember him?) International Airport, the RICKSHAW will complete the North/South toll road by 2015. Since they do not have unions in China, the RICKSHAW doesn't intend to entertain them in Jamaica. Indeed the RICKSHAW will provide employment for over 1,000 un-unionised Chinese workers.
Exactly what the financial cost to Jamaica of the yet-to-be-named-after-a-politician North/South highway will be, is uncertain. Without resorting to rocket science, it is safe to assume that we will be expected on the diplomatic front to object to Japan's attempt to annex islands in the South China Sea, decline to invite the Dalai Lama to the annual National Prayer Breakfast, and issue a formal complaint to the Nobel Peace Prize committee for having awarded their 2010 honour to Liu Xai (still in jail in China).
In an effort to stem the flow of red ink leaking from numerous statutory and other public sector bodies like the JUTC, NWA, Port Authority, UDC, Caymanas Park, and the police transport repair division, we can anticipate that the RICKSHAW will be contracted to manage them before long. Let us hope said "vehicle" is not asked to rehabilitate the railway after two high-speed trains met head-on at Wenzhou in 2011.
As usual the nation — apart from the trade unions — will turn a blind eye to the RICKSHAW'S relentless progress. One would hope that the Ministry of Education will redouble its efforts to introduce Mandarin into the high school curriculum to widen employment opportunities.
Evidence that RICKSHAW is having a major impact and that the Sino-ization of Jamaica is on course will be seen when a tsunami of photographs of its executives and their wives begin to appear on those pages devoted to the social scene.
