Dear Editor,
The National Democratic Movement (NDM) notes with great interest the unusual news release issued by eight interest groups in an attempt to thwart the people's participation in a highly significant decision of utmost importance and concern to them.
The People's National Party for years has been trying to remove the Privy Council for the equally foreign Caribbean Court of Justice. Since 1995, the NDM has urged successive governments to take the issue to the people. The ideal opportunity presents itself now since another general election is due in 14 months.
The NDM is asking the Government to trust the people and place a separate ballot at the next general election with one question:
Do you agree that Jamaica should leave the Privy Council for the Caribbean Court of Justice? Yes or No.
The people's answer to this question will put to rest decades of argument and disunity, and unite all Jamaicans who will believe in what they have participated in -- a healthy democratic decision which will affect their justice henceforth.
The NDM is reminding the Government that there can be 'no peace without justice'.
