Dear Editor,

I would like to endorse the sentiments expressed in your editorial in the Sunday Observer, with the headline 'Mr Hopeton Caven: A decent human being'.

I knew Hopeton for a long time. We first met when I worked in the Conciliation Department of the then Ministry of Labour and I had the opportunity to sit between him and his team and the employers' representatives.

When years later I joined the private sector as a negotiator, I sat across the table from him, and it was always challenging, as he sought to get the best for the workers that he represented.

Although that was his goal, he always listened carefully to arguments from the other side of the table. And when he believed that you were doing the best that you could, financially, he would make this known to those he represented.

He was a leader, and I agree with the statement that he had a passion for advancing the welfare of the Jamaican worker.

Hopeton Caven has left a legacy that will live forever. He was a passionate trailblazer and gave invaluable service to the labour movement in Jamaica.
