Dear Editor,
While many contemplate the negatives versus the positives in the conditional gifting of a prison from the UK Government RISE Life Management Services, without hesitation, would like to publicly thank the CHASE Fund for stepping up to the plate and gifting us with the funding to support the establishment of a day treatment programme for adolescents who use substances in general, and specifically those who use marijuana.
We at RISE are convinced that the success of this programme will definitely lead to a decrease in the number of young men being involved in criminal activity and thus end up prison bound. Many of the young men who will attend the programme have matters before the newly established Children's Drug Treatment Court, while others are on the verge of being expelled from school.
This day programme will be held on a Saturday from 8:30 am - 2:30 pm and allows for more intensified treatment programming, as well as facilitates youth from across the island given that this is a non-schoolday activity. With the belief of many that the recent decriminalisation of marijuana in Jamaica may increase the incidence of ganja use among youth, the establishment of this programme is both timely and critical. Add to this the dearth of programmes available for adolescents to receive treatment for drug usage and the project becomes even more important.
RISE's Saturday programme will be the only one of its kind on the island. This programme will provide the opportunity for some of our young men to change their life course and create a better future, not only for themselves and their families, but for Jamaica as well. Many of these young men lack goal directed thinking and behaviour as well as nurturing mentorship and modeling of appropriate values and attitudes.
Again, RISE feels indebted to the CHASE Fund as we humbly take on the challenge of motivating and inspiring our young men to change and refocus on education and training which will enable them to make a valuable and much needed contribution to families, communities and ultimately nation building. The programme commenced on Saturday, October 10, 2015.
