No ordinary criminal killed Hewitt

Dear Editor,

The murder of former Superintendent Anthony "Tony" Hewitt shows how determined some of those with criminal intent are to destroy our crime fighters and public servants who have not succumbed to corruption and bribes.

As an executive of the Firearms Authority, Hewitt was one of the few Jamaicans who wished to see the consumer satisfied without nepotism, bandoolism and plain corruption.

It is no hidden fact that under the previous board, many licences were suspect. The frightening and dirty stigma of hegemony was imprinted everywhere. Colour and class violated the board as they thought only a minority of Jamaicans were worthy of gun ownership in Jamaica. Not much has really changed in Jamaica. Those with money will always be the ones to expropriate our pop culture, to make more millions. Corruption will always continue. I am particularly angry at the murder of this humble lawman who has done so much for crime fighting in the Kingston Metropolitan Area. Moreso because he was a friend of mine. Hewitt is one official you could not dare to offer bribes. His value system was from the old school - service to country, a good Clarendon man who refused to fill his pockets for some little elitist ill-gotten wealth.

I can bet anyone the strike at Hewitt was not by any ordinary criminal. It must have been orchestrated by those at the top of this society with multi-millions. I am sure the rogues will be brought to justice soon. Time will tell. We wish God's comfort for Tony's family and also for his close circle of friends.
