Soap opera and 'tracing' masquerading as politics

Dear Editor,

All we have seen from the ensuing election campaigns is nothing but empty promises and scandals. Ever since the hinting of early elections by the prime minister, there has been no serious policy discussions from most candidates vying to represent Jamaicans.

In this the 21st century, Jamaicans need to distance themselves from the voting out of a party, but focus on the practice of voting for a cause. We, as a people, need to push our politicians away from filling their election campaigns with personal attacks and clawing and digging at the bottom of the barrel for a scandal to sink the other side. It is past time that the Jamaican political landscape shifted from the backward practice of scandal campaigns to the use of policy to differentiate each side.

The Jamaican people deserve better. Such a shift in focus will inevitably force the political landscape to adapt and come to the realisation that the Jamaican voter will no longer stand for the political soap opera and 'tracing' that has been masquerading as political campaigning.

At this point the die is cast and the power to change the course of this nation's political landscape lies not with the two main parties but with the voters.
