Dear Editor,
I am going to put my atheism aside and express great pity for "God". For, if we are to believe the utterances coming out of our two main political parties, our goose is really cooked!
I heard the leader of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) during a rally in St Ann quoting Bible passages to justify his position that, in effect, God is going to deliver us through his party.
The president of the People's National Party is now telling us that she will only call the election after God touches her and gives her the date. Poor God!
I hear our private sector leaders saying we need to get this election over and done with and that a drawn-out election can do more harm than good for our economy. I have no doubt that many within the private sector are desperate for God to touch the prime minister in no uncertain way very soon.
However, based on what I have been seeing and hearing for some time, I wonder if God is as smart as he is made out to be.
Take the promise of the JLP leader to remove school fees. He is now telling us that he will allocate just under $2 billion to make up for that removal. Now, I know that God is supposed to be infinite and as such, I suppose numbers don't have much significance for him. But, assuming that the JLP is God's deliverance for us, I am now wondering if this is an example of an inability to add up numbers correctly -- or at all!
God's deliverance, the JLP, is always at pains to lecture us about accountability. That party routinely calls for non-performing ministers to be sacked. Yet, this is the same party that had its own transport minister sacked for gross mismanagement of the funds a few years ago and now wants to have that same minister reinstalled.
Of course, the PNP, God's supposed alternative, is no better. According to the cries of many, it is riddled with incompetent ministers.
I wonder if God is trying to teach us something. After all, we are constantly being told that he works in mysterious ways. However, this lesson has surely taken the cake! Then again, knowing God, maybe we are yet to learn.
You know, for decades we have had to be putting up with these parties, God's supposed instruments, in search of a better life, and all we have had is a situation that is not getting any better for us. I wonder if God is using these parties to demonstrate his love for us? I hear that God routinely allows those he favours to be punished -- you know, like Job?
Some of us would want God to deliver us from these politicians. If these politicians are to be believed, maybe we should desire deliverance from God! Poor God, indeed!
