Leaders are supposed to be accountable and answerable to the people they lead. Leaders should demonstrate good leadership qualities. A good leader is one who is visible, vocal and attentive to the people they lead.
It cannot be that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is only visible to the nation when the election draws near. It is evident that the prime minister of Jamaica is not accountable to us as we allow her to do the same things over and over again. It is my opinion that she has shown poor leadership skills since she took the reins as prime minister. It has been four years since she was elected by the people of Jamaica and the people are no better with her as leader.
A few days ago there was a massacre in France that claimed the lives of 129 people and within hours after the attack, our very own prime minister dispatched a press release condemning the incident and sending her deepest condolence to the people of France. While there is nothing wrong with that, she never sees it fit to do the same thing when Jamaica suffers horrific and barbaric events of our very own. How caring she is to the affairs overseas.
The prime minister seems to act only in the interest of her party and protect her party faithfuls, rather than to act in the interest of the nation. She is silent on national issues. After public outcry and outrage she responded to the dead babies scandal that rocked the nation. What did she do? She did little by reassigning Dr Fenton Ferguson to another ministry. She took care of her own.
A number of women and children have been raped and killed and she hasn't demonstrated any effective leadership or move of national effect. On a few occasions she spoke, but not enough. It seems to us that if there is no public outcry she will not respond.
Why is it the only time our prime minister is visible is when election is fast approaching? Why is it that the prime minister only sees it fit to dispatch press releases when the nation is calling for her to act on a matter? Is it that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is a World Cup or Olympics prime minister? Only appears every 4 years.
