Dear Editor,
I write to express my deepest appreciation for the wonderful service I have been privileged to enjoy for over 10 years.
I was born in the early 70s in rural St Andrew and understand completely what it feels like to not have the luxuries of many things, particularly the service of a library to aid in information access through books and technology.
At that time, if parents could not afford to provide books, and even assistance with homework, then many would waste their God-given intellectual potential, continue to be left behind, before bacoming a menace to society sooner or later. The library was my saviour.
The Stony Hill Branch Library has been a haven for my family. The National Library is an extremely important initiative, and I do pray for its continuous maintenance and growth in order to facilitate many less fortunate with challenges and those with great intellectual potential who may, through this opportunity, become the next prime minister or leader who may bring about change to solve many of our existing problems.
I have also benefited as a small business person who often needs to construct business letters and follow through with business correspondence. Believe me when I say the resources of the library have helped with knowlegde and services to advance my efforts.
Today, my children have also benefited from the library. The research capability and relaxation by reading books and sharing in activities greatly contribute to their development.
One memorable experience was when I placed my children in the National Reading Competition and was extremely happy to identify such potential in them that I would not have otherwise discovered without that challenge. My son was able to reach the finals after not being able to attend school for two years due to personal economic challenges as a single parent. My two children are both back in school and doing extremely well.
I do believe that the National Reading Competition plays a vital role in nation-building and those in authority should never allow anything to make them lose sight of this reality.
God bless the growth and development of the Jamaica Library Service and the staff at the Stony Hill branch who have adopted me into their family.
