Peter's box

Dr Peter Phillips has now opened the proverbial Pandora's box by requesting the public declaration of assets by Opposition Leader Andrew Holness. That mansion on the hill has attracted so much attention in this 'election campaign' that many are discussing whether or not the means to build it were properly acquired or not.

Dr Phillips makes an excellent point. He carries the bar to where it has been now for many societies, including here in the UK where many Jamaicans live. It is time that our country enters the realm of true transparency and, therefore, I fully agree with the finance minister.

In my native community of Goshen in St Elizabeth, there is also a similar conversation happening. We, too, would like to know the means through which the PNP candidate for St Elizabeth North Eastern has moved so quickly and so high up the ladder. It is as much a Cinderella story for him as it is for the Opposition leader.

We, too, would like to know how the plazas, the properties and the houses on the Santa Cruz hills were acquired. We, too, would like to know if all taxes due were paid over in full to the authorities. I wonder, wouldn't Dr Phillips's request be more credible if all 63 of the People's National Party candidates would declare their assets publicly first; then we could take the "beam" out from Andrew Holness's eyes.

I would even settle for Evan Redman's declaration alone as a step in the right and transparent direction. Please, Mr Candidate, won't you follow Dr Phillips's suggestion and declare publicly the sources of your wealth? You see, that is the thing about a Pandora's box; once opened it cannot be closed.
