Dear Editor,
Look up the words neanderthal and boorish and chances are you will find Chris Gayle’s actions fit squarely at both entries.
However, I am well aware that many Jamaicans can never find fault with their idols, especially of the sporting kind, so I expect that many of them will take me to task.
In addition, I have no doubt that the perennial apologists and the ones who espouse physcho-babble will also line up for a shot at me. But I don’t care.
From where I sit, Chris Gayle has let down a whole nation of males with his clumsy, obviously unwanted, and totally inappropriate and lurid behaviour.
But I guess we had this coming.
Gayle, in my opinion, has been having his own way in the cricket arena for a long time, with obviously no one able to or prepared to stand up to him and show him the reality of a connected world.
There is no doubt that he is a very rich young man, and no one should envy him even one penny because he has earned his wealth using his God-given talent and through many sacrifices.
But money does not equal class, nor does it remove the obligation for civilised behaviour.
As the late Rex Nettleford famously said: “A buttu in a Benz is still a buttu.”
