PNP will still win St Elizabeth NE

Dear Editor,

There may be some who believe that the squabble involving the supporters of the sitting member of parliament for St Elizabeth North Eastern Raymond Pryce and his replacement may mean that the People’s National Party (PNP) will not win that seat. Those who harbour such ideas don’t understand Jamaica’s politics very well.

St Elizabeth North East, like some other constituencies, is what many of us call a “safe seat” for the PNP. Like other safe seats, both for the PNP and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), no matter what kind of squabble that may exist, the party “owning” (yes, owning) the seat, will always win it back.

I hear some people talking about the PNP being in big trouble for the retaining the seat; but that will not happen.

Interestingly, there is an independent candidate who is trying to get the seat. You know, if it wasn’t for his foreign accent, we probably would never have heard of him. Some sections of the media are trying to give us the impression that this independent candidate has some new ideas for us. I think they are more impressed with his accent than his ideas — which aren’t new.

No doubt that the independent candidate hopes to benefit from a split vote that he hopes the PNP may suffer from the squabble, which, as far as I can tell, is the only reason he seems to want to run for that seat. I can tell that independent candidate, from now, that if he gets more than a handful of votes he will be lucky. He surely will not win — not by a long shot!

Like the JLP and its safe seats, the PNP can always count on winning the safe seat of St Elizabeth North Eastern. It always does!
