Enough of Warmington, Mr Speaker

Dear Editor,

I am a Jamaican who lives outside the country, but I follow events at home with a keen eye.

I am aware that the House of Parliament is getting ready to debate the Sexual Harassment Act shortly. With this in mind, I am appalled that a member of the House could in the full view and presence of his peers and female colleagues launch such a blatant and crass act of sexual harassment on Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna.

This member, Everald Warmington, has in the past committed several acts of boorish behaviour, both within the House and publicly with seeming impunity, and the time has now come for the Speaker of the House to address this problem.

How can we expect people in the country to honour the laws made by the legislature when they see members act in ways that would contravene and compromise those very laws?

Warmington’s unprovoked and uncalled for attack on Minister Hanna must be strongly condemned. And I am waiting to hear a condemnation from his party leader as soon as possible, as well as the women parliamentarians, especially those on his side.

A strong message must be sent, and now, so that other politicians who may be of like mind will think twice before they act or speak.
