Why JC was chosen to host East Rural conference?

Dear Editor,

As a Jamaica Labour Party delegate and worker in St Andrew East Rural over several years, I feel compelled to clear the air as to why the Jamaica College auditorium was selected as the venue to host the constituency conference where Juliet Holness was formally presented as the standard-bearer for the constituency.

Yes, it is a known fact that, in strict geographical terms, Jamaica College is not located in St Andrew East Rural, but in the neighbouring constituency of St Andrew Eastern, so let me hasten to point out that it was the management team and experienced workers of St Andrew East Rural — like myself, who have an understanding of what will work best and what may not — who suggested that the Jamaica College auditorium should be the location for Juliet Holness’s constituency conference.

Anyone who is familiar with the lay of the land across the constituency, and know how distal some areas are, knows of the challenges in finding a venue to host an event of the nature and magnitude of the constituency conference. One ought to bear in mind that there would have been workers and constituents travelling from as far as from Westphalia, Constitution Hill, Dublin Castle, Guava Ridge, Sommerset, Maryland, Redlight, Irish Town, and Dallas in the rural enclaves, to Bull Bay and Harbour View in the urban centre.

A middle ground or compromise location had to be found. Jamaica College was identified and settled on as the venue because it was deemed to be quite convenient and accessible to all concerned. The constituency conference had two components — a private session and a public session. It was determined that Jamaica College was a most suitable venue to facilitate both components as privacy was needed for the private session and adequate accommodation was needed for the public session.

Any suggestion that Juliet Holness slighted the people of St Andrew East Rural by convening the conference in a neighbouring constituency, as I have seen on social media, is nothing but mischief-making and is as baseless and erroneous as it is unwarranted. Those detractors should better spend their time focusing on the real issues at hand - Juliet Holness’ plans to move the constituency from poverty to prosperity.
