What has St Andrew SW to show after 40 years of Portia?

Dear Editor,

After some 43 years of involvement in representational politics in St Andrew South Western — 39 of which have been as member of parliament — Portia Simpson Miller has one of the most underdeveloped constituencies in Jamaica.

The constituency features a dilapidated infrastructure, closure of key industrial entities and factories, poor sanitation, overflowing raw sewage, rampant electricity theft, squatting, underperforming schools, and is the ‘headquarters’ of the windshield wiper nuisance.

I deem it important to point out that my observations are being brought to the fore out of concern for the state of my country as a whole, and the prevailing lack of accountability on the part of some parliamentarians.

St Andrew South Western is the poster child of what representational politics and 43 years of representation should not be. The state of the constituency betrays an unmitigated disaster. It is evidently clear that Portia Simpson Miller has not made much contribution to her constituency.

How can Portia Simpson Miller lead Jamaica when she can’t develop her own constituency? Portia Simpson Miller, what do you have to show? What are your achievements?
