Dear Editor,
I have long maintained that Jamaicans need to seriously scrutinise those whom they elect as councillors to represent them. I am convinced that it should not be any person who is simply popular in the community.
Let me draw attention to comments attributed to Councillor Winston Maragh out of Clarendon at a Jamaica Labour Party meeting. According to Maragh, “Michael Manley is an idiot”, and he further misled listeners by stating that “3,000 persons died from CHIKV”.
Suffice it to say, the facts are there to prove that Michael Manley was no idiot. Manley’s contribution to Jamaica and the region is noted in many history books. He was responsible for the introduction of the minimum wage and equal pay for women; got rid of the Bastard Act; proposed free education; and introduced the National Housing Trust. I would implore Maragh to take up a book and read on Manley. You might not agree with Manley’s policies; however, that doesn’t put you in the position to be disparaging in your remarks in an effort to score cheap political points.
The other issue, the CHIKV toll, really warrants no explanation. No report in Jamaica reflects such a claim of 3,000 CHIKV-related deaths.
