Dear Editor,
(This is an open letter to the Inland Revenue Department).
Seasons greetings and all the best for 2013. Please explain to me what has happened to the $10,000 that I paid for traffic tickets in 2006 and 2009.
Curiousity got the better of me and I was led to visit the amnesty website with delinquent traffic offenders who have outstanding tickets. Previously, I had no inclination to do so because, to the best of my knowledge, 'Amnesty' means a 'general pardon'. I did not have any outstanding tickets, hence, I never needed any pardon. However, after hearing other individuals complaining that they have paid for their tickets, or their cases have been dismissed by the courts, and their names are still there showing tickets outstanding, I decided to check.
On 29th December around 2:00 pm, I visited the website. To my dismay, over the years I have received two traffic tickets totalling $10,000, and the system has me as not having paid them.
I am curious to know what has happened to those monies that I paid and your accurate copy of the records. I clearly remember paying for those tickets and receiving receipts. Unfortunately, a few years ago I got rid of one of the receipts, the other I cannot put my hand on.
One would have thought that if you are threatening the citizens of Jamaica with imprisonment, your records would have been more accurate. Is this the best that can be done for the people of Jamaica going into 2013? The dollar is sliding, cost of living is going up, how do I explain to my employer why I need to lose productive working hours to spend time in the tax office to query this recent development due to your inaccuracies?
Several Jamaicans are experiencing the same concerns and your prompt response would be greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to a better relationship in 2013.
Concerned Jamaican
