Dear Editor,
As Jamaicans prepare for election 2016, whether it is the ruling People’s National Party (PNP) or the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) that forms the next Government, I hope that the Administration places strong emphasis on issues like immigration, education, agriculture, health care, national security, and maintaining an effective justice system.
While the prime minister and the leader of the Opposition announce their goals for the future of the country, and aspiring members of parliament or present parliamentarians reach out to the constituents in search of votes, I see the need for an Interior Ministry (also known as Ministry of Home Affairs), a government ministry typically responsible for policing, national security, emergency management, supervision of local government, conduct of elections, public administration and immigration matters because, if a ministry of this kind is operational in Jamaica, then the Government would be aware or up-to-date on most issues that transpired within the country.
I believe that the lack of accountability and supervision in key areas resulted in a variety of negative factors that stagnate the economy and hinder growth, which is a serious economic issue. So a ministry of this kind will let Government be up-to-date on internal issues in order to make meaningful decisions regarding a number of issues that affect the country on a whole.
As a nation, we cannot afford to be caught up in political battles, heated debates, finger-pointing, and division while the rest of the Caribbean Community positions itself for upward mobility, increased earnings and growth.
In spite of our high homicide rate that is based on a number of social issues which must be addressed over time, Jamaica is a great country with talented people who need leaders with vision and honesty in order to promote a better standard of living as we increase our ratings and rankings on the world indices based on issues of importance.
And so, if the next Administration focuses on the topics that I have mentioned along with the production of goods and services, then we will be able to minimise the many social issues that affect us as a nation because we can.
