New beginning

Dear Editor,

A few days ago the people of this great nation were again given an opportunity to exercise their franchise at the polls. Interestingly, the then Government thought that they would be in office for ever and a day. But that was not to be.

Well-thinking Jamaicans, young and old, are tired of the lack of accountability from representative and the stagnation of our economy. The forever has passed and the day has come.

What was made clear was that, not every horse is placed in a thoroughbred race.

I am particularly pleased at the brilliant show that the new female guards put on. They are to be greatly praised and rewarded. The Olympian, with obstacles and odds, has shown that runners are certainly classed and that there can be only one winner.

The integrity of our representatives is of utmost importance and we must realise that we are responsible for and to those we represent. A representative is a “caretaker”; some seem as though they are not in politics to be servants of the people. Some constituencies are in dire need of representation.

Representatives need to try to satisfy the people’s needs as best as they can. Not everything will be possible, but at least it can be said that the members of parliament tried. Do not make promises to the people to gain their favour, because as an MP, one does not hold the purse strings of the Government.

This is a new beginning and the road to success and progress must be charted carefully. There is no doubt that the prime minister-designate will have his team of capable officers to lighten the burden he and the country have ahead. It is incumbent on us as responsible people and to give them the time and support they will need. Naturally, there are some things that will have to be curtailed, changed, renegotiated, or even abandoned in the name of and for progress. The people deserve better and here is the opportunity to effect this.

Let’s band together, as a people and nation, to give hope and prosperity a chance in these trying times.

God bless you all, and God bless Jamaica.
