First things first

Dear Editor,

Five of us senior professionals, with more than three score and 10 years below each belt, and laden with degrees, diplomas, certificates, and barrels full of experience, have never seen such a close election.

The still-counting Electoral Office of Jamaica officials have unleashed an array of twittering advisors, consultants and experts who are eagerly trying to give directives to the new Government.

Our first concerns are crime, health and water.

Don’t be too proud to ask for help. Put through calls to America and Cuba to deal immediately with chronic crime. We ask the leaders to hold no million-dollar Grand Gala this year and have the people present that money to the newly appointed sanitation services and health board, with the understanding that any doctor, nurse, porter, or ancillary worker found stealing hospital supplies will be flogged in the public square. Stealing will stop when we put first things first.

Around mid-May each year, for more than 50 years, the commissioners of water have issued statements and schedules and warnings, all of the above pointing to their incompetence and their inability to give us water. The word ‘commission’ is a misleading humbug, and the name of the main water supplier should be changed to Jamaica Water Services. Giving service will make a big difference where the handling of water is concerned.

Every member of the excuse-making National Works Agency, from the high commissioners, the water-savvy consultants, directors, executive officers, the non-phone-friendly receptionists, the groundsman raking the brown grass should be transferred to other jobs and a new set of engineers and workers brought in. Invite water experts from California Desert, Israel and St Elizabeth, who know about water and works and who will train our mainly younger staffers to give us the water that is already here.

We’ll discuss secong things second.

Mills Blake
