Dear Editor,
The Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), its board of directors, members, management, staff and the wider agricultural sector reflect on the tremendous contribution made by the late Royston Johnson, second vice-president of the JAS, who transitioned to another life on March 7, 2016. Royston Johnson has given over 35 years of continuous and dedicated service to the agricultural sector.
He was employed by the JAS as branch organiser for Portland in March 1978, where he worked for 11 years and was transferred to St Ann as branch organiser in November 1989. He also served as branch organiser in the parishes of Hanover and St James between 1982 and 1987 before he was promoted in 1987 to the position of co-operative marketing officer. He resigned his position from the JAS in September 1991.
Royston Johnson continued his commitment to Jamaica through service on the JAS’s board of management, where he served as board representative for the parish of St Ann from 2002 to the time of his passing. At his passing he was serving as St Ann Association of Branch Societies president since 2014 and vice-president of the JAS since September 2012. He played a leading role in the introduction of a parish agricultural show in the parish of St Ann and this year marks the fourth staging. He was chairman of the membership subcommittee and he also served on other subcommittees at the time of his passing.
The JAS and our over 200,000 farmers salute Royston Johnson, a quiet giant who soldiered with remarkable purpose and commitment for the development of our farmers, the agricultural sector and our country.
We extend sincere condolence to his family, friends and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.
