Dear Editor,
On February 25, 2016, I voted for the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) because of the tax policy they promised to implement on April 1, 2016. However, it is becoming increasingly apparent that they may not be able to fulfil this promise for obvious reasons.
I, for one, would forgive them if they cannot. I arrived at this conclusion for three specific reasons:
1. Jamaican politicians make promises they can’t keep to win elections all the time.
2. We cannot sacrifice the progress we have made under the economic reform programme.
3. If the JLP fulfils it’s other promises to create real growth of five to 10 per cent and reduce the exchange rate, then they can create real prosperity.
Even though the same concerns were raised by the People’s National Party, I think Jamaicans will forgive the JLP Government because of these valid circumstances.
I desperately want my $18,000, and will hold the Government accountable for promises made, but I understand the constraints that may delay or completely prevent them from implementing the tax policy.
