Dear Editor,
Keeping our kids in high school until they are 18 years old is an excellent idea and I laud the Government for coming up with it. The main question that needs to be answered is how will it work to the benefit of the kids, the parents and the country, who are the three stakeholders?
I believe that any plan that the Government proposes must be so designed to benefit all stakeholders, and for such a plan to achieve such a goal it must be so structured that the kids leaving high school after spending these two extra years do so with the means needed to get a job, go to college, or start their own business if they want to.
Additionally three things such be achieved: the first is these young people should be taught five subjects namely, mathematics, English language, principles of business, economics, and human and social biology and pass them at the ordinary level. The second is that they should also be taught a worthwhile craft or skill. And the third is that they should be taught how to speak in public. These things would create a win-win situation for all of us, but the students themselves would benefit the most. The bottom line is that these three things will make these young people a more rounded and confident set going forward.
The benefit to the kids: The kids would enter the adult world equipped with the opportunity to decide whether they want to go off to college immediately, get a job, or become an entrepreneur.
The benefit to the parents: The parents would be happy, because it would take the burden off their minds to come up with things to get their kids involved in until they become adults
The benefit to the country: This would be enormous, because it would create a positive rippling effect through both the Government and the private sector.
