Dear Editor,
The Gleaner seems to have swallowed the bait — hook, line and sinker — that the Government must not pursue the tax relief to the working poor of Jamaica.
That Jamaica’s economic peril is assured if, for the first time at last, a Government — actually through economic policy — recognises that direct relief is due to the working poor of Jamaica.
There is a burden to be borne, but not by those who earn less than US$35 per day. A shift is necessary!
The Gleaner has no team of economists on staff, so therefore, it is a mouthpiece for the failed, stagnant policies that, although resulting in some balance sheet improvement, will not achieve growth. We must grow to survive, and to grow we must have investment.
The tax relief package is an instrument and it will result in increased economic activity.
We have a lot more to do; a lot more. We must cut the red tape in Government and encourage entrepreneurship. We must level the playing field so budding entrepreneurs are not robbed of their investments. We must seek new markets overseas and stoutly resist any Caricom partner from benefiting from any unfair advantages due to historical negligence when negotiating.
