Dear Editor,e are deeply saddened by the death of veteran journalist, cricket writer and West Indian Cricket commentator Tony Cozier. This is a shocker to us. It’s really hard to believe that such a giant – in terms of knowledge and understanding of the game – has died.
I am just giving my personal view on this awesome stalwart, and I am also extending my condolence to his family. For me, Tony Cozier was one of the world’s best cricket commentators.
He was number one in the Caribbean. I have Joseph ‘Reds’ Perreira as number two and Andrew Mason as number three. I had a difficulty in choosing between the late Hugh Crosskill and Andrew Mason, as to who is the better one, because Hugh Crosskill was a very brilliant and exciting commentator, just like Andrew. But, from ever since, Tony and ‘Reds’ were the two best in the Caribbean. I could go further by saying that the late Christopher Martin Jenkins, Trevor Bailey, and Henry Blofeld were awesome too.
Tony has left us, but his legacy will remain with us. Michael Holding was commenting on Tony’s death, and responding to one of the questions he was asked, this is what Holding said about the great Tony Cozier: “Whenever he was having his meal, he always ate a little ice cream. He loved ice cream so much, so I hope if he is in Heaven or wherever he has gone, he will find ice cream there.”
So, we the cricket lovers say: “Well done, Tony. You have done your job magnificently. We miss you very much. Rest in peace.”
