Intervene before Phillips gets six-love

Dear Editor,

After listening to Dr Peter Phillips’ budget presentation I have formed the opinion that an intervention is needed, for his own good. He continues to spew the same negative rhetoric that the People’s National Party (PNP) bombarded the public with during their failed election campaign. His refusal to change his approach reminds me of gamblers who repeatedly lose but insist on playing one more time.

The PNP put Jamaica through a protracted period of austerity, with the illusion that it would magically fix the economy. However, austerity by itself has never created growth in any economy. Instead, it resulted in an extended period of undue hardship for the people of Jamaica.

The Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) tax plan offers much-needed relief and hope for the working poor who have been repeatedly called upon to make hard sacrifices in the national interest.

Although it is widely re-cognised that the PNP had no answer to the JLP’s tax plan during the election campaign period, the Opposition spokesman on finance was brazen enough to face the people with a budget presentation that was void of creative solutions. Instead, the public was once again subjected to a prophecy of doom and gloom, which is the last thing we want to hear.

One has to wonder why Dr Phillips would gamble on using the same negative approach that was employed in the PNP’s failed election campaign. Is it that he and his party are bankrupt of ideas? Comrades who have Dr Phillips’ best interest at heart should intervene immediately and pull him away from the table before he picks up a six-love.
