Is water really life?

Dear Editor,

The National Water Commission (NWC) has a slogan that indicates that they are of the opinion that “water is life”, and I guess to those of us fortunate to have that commodity provided by the NWC can agree with the mantra of the commission.

However, my mother has not been able to get “any life” from the commission since May 2000. What is the message the NWC is sending to her?

This matter was reported to the NWC on a number of occasions, and after six years a meter was installed and the precious commodity was provided on three days, March 21, April 7 and April 21. Since then, she has been taken off “life support” as not a single drop of water has been provided by NWC.

Our family is, however, thankful that the heavens have seen it fit to provide the commodity on fairly regular basis as she has been able to store water obtained via rainfall as the area (Guy’s Hill) regularly gets its showers of blessing.

The area has potable water as most of the residents are connected to the main which runs less than 30 meters from my mother’s home. To add to the level of frustration, the commission has also sought to extract their pound of flesh by sending a bill for services that they have not provided.

We have been made to understand that work was undertaken on the main years ago and apparently the NWC “decided” at that time not to reconnect her premises to the supply line.

I am sure you can understand my family’s level of frustration and downright disgust with the commission’s unwillingness to address a problem spanning over 15 years.

The family is thankful that my mother, now 92 years young, is healthy, self-sufficient, and has all of her faculties functioning well, but we would wish that the NWC would provide the resource without any further delay as their inaction is a clear testimony of disregard.

For far too long we have accepted mediocrity of service from our Government agencies and it is time to hold these entities and their employees accountable as they are the same people clamouring for increased wages and benefits without meeting the expectation of their clients.
