Dignity for the dead in Darliston

Dear Editor,

This is to draw attention to the appalling condition of the Darliston, Westmoreland, cemetery.

The cemetery is in a terribly poor state. This land was designated for the members of the Darliston Housing Scheme so that they could have a place to bury their dead, but it may well now be classified as a forest!

There is absolutely no place to walk to dig your loved ones’ graves. How on earth, then, will people traverse that kind of ‘bush’ to attend funerals?

We need those in authority, who have now been made aware of the state of the cemetery, to act quickly to fix this disgrace in the town of Darliston.

The Member of Parliament for south-east Westmoreland has been made aware of the condition and pictures of the site were also sent. To date, nothing has been done. All we have been told is that the Government does not have money allotted for the cemetery now. That is not acceptable. We are residents of Jamaica, paying our due share of taxes and we need to have these basic services.

There is no road to get to the plots, no water, no sign, nothing, except bush covering graves and taller than a six-foot human.

As a start, the cemetery should be kept clean of bush, shrubs and debris and have a clear path for people to be able to go and prepare the graves to bury their dead.
