Dear Editor,

I agree with Robert Dalley who wrote an incisive letter to the editor, published in the Jamaica Observer, suggesting to Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie that he audit all parish councils stemming from the numerous reports of corruption at some councils.

As one who is concerned about those breaches taking place at some councils I support the informed writer in imploring Minister McKenzie to instruct the audit division of his ministry to carry out such an audit to ascertain how widespread the corruption is across parish councils and allow the law to take its course.

Just look at that hotel building collapse which took place in Negril some months ago and the Hanover Parish Council’s building section had approved that building plan. Just look at the way in which former Lucea Mayor Shernet Haughton operated in awarding contracts to her immediate family members, and she is still a sitting People’s National Party (PNP) councillor. Why hasn’t the PNP President Portia Simpson Miller demanded that she resign as councillor?

This nationwide parish council audit is urgently required, Minister McKenzie.

Audley Gordon, deputy general secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, has applied to the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) for the post of managing director and I believe he is a suitable person for the job. He is qualified, experienced and should have the skills. The former Administration appointed known PNP member Jennifer Edwards to that top job and no one from the then Opposition Jamaica Labour Party objected at that time. I should see no objection coming from them, while in Opposition, to a suitably qualified Labourite.

In my view, Audley Gordon is a professional person, man of integrity, and should be named NSWMA’s new managing director and allowed to reform the agency.
