Dear Editor,
Former Munro College Boys’ Champs sprint double winner Delano Williams has been named in the 80-member Great Britain team to the Rio Olympic Games, so it is possible to see races where 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th places will have Jamaican connections, some competing for other countries. And I know Jamaicans would be cheering them on with the same degree of pride as if they were competing for us.
Jamaica, dubbed the world’s ‘Sprint Factory’, is too small to absorb and train all the potentially good athletes. Soon many will be running and performing for many other countries, including China — that would be interesting.
Our well-decorated Merlene Ottey ran for Jamaica and then for the little- known country Slovenia, and that was a lesson in what possibilities are there for Jamaican athletes.
There are also countries that cannot find any athletes to send to Olympics, so they could order some from the ‘Sprint Factory’.
If it is not too late and Jason Morgan, the discus thrower, does not make the Jamaican team, could he be drafted in by another country in time for the Olympics? I am curious to see what he would come up with at those Games. Would it urge the selectors to give the “yout’ a chance”?
