We weren’t paying attention

Dear Editor,

For decades, Government after Government have supervised and managed the increase in crime across Jamaica with more and more laws, while the crimes continue to increase. Indefinite detention, a red-painted gun court, state of emergency, Suppression of Crime Act, eradication squad, Kingfish, hot spot policing, curfews, operations, extraditions, Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency, Proceeds of Crime Act, and more have been the tools employed.

Herbert Gayle, an anthropologist of social violence at The University of the West Indies, Mona, said in January 2016 that authorities have not addressed the root cause of violence in Jamaica, so it was only a matter of time before killings ticked upward. No one was paying attention and we are reaping the whirlwind of murders.

Poverty, inequality, greed, relative deprivation, unemployment, lack of primary education, State violence, corruption, and disregarding the rule of law have been identified as some of the main drivers of criminality which must now be given attention.
