Obama didn’t fail me

Dear Editor,

I wish to respond to a letter to the editor published on July 14, 2016, titled ‘Obama has failed blacks’.

As a black woman, I find it very offensive and repulsive when I read articles like the above mentioned, or when people make pathetic comments as such, “Obama did not do enough for the black community,” or, “He did not do enough to help black people.”

I honestly do believe that he wholeheartedly wanted to do all that he could to help his sisters and brothers. If some of us are honest, then, definitely, we could all agree with that statement.

But Obama alone does not make the laws; Congress does. They are the main ones who, at times, make it so difficult for him to execute a Bill.

The truth is, too, some of us blacks do have a longing or desire for that day when a black president can “set us free”; but it is full time now for us to let go of the past and move towards the future.

As blacks, we all should come together as one and start doing some things for ourselves. If we don’t show some positive interest, then, of course, no one will take the initiative to change or do things for us. If we don’t change, the reality is we will find ourselves in a very, very dark place.
