Neocolonialism on the eve of Independence?

Dear Editor,

I was moved by the neocolonialist gesture of the US Embassy, again showing its true colors.

I am moved to shock at the utter disregard the US Embassy has displayed for our national holidays. It is unimaginable that on the eve of Independence, where we celebrate the triumphant retreat of foreign colonisers, victoriously claiming the supposedly inalienable right to define ourselves and shape our own culture, values and laws that the American Embassy chose to shine the light on themselves, not in celebration of our Independence, but in promotion of their own rainbow colony within our borders.

I am appalled that it could even enter their minds to ensue on the eve of the birthday of our great nation a political strategy to promote anything but Jamaica.

To our wise and courageous political representatives I ask this: How much political activism is allowed by our dear guests on our home soil? If boundaries exist, where are they? I understand that we expect guests to know their limits, but all guests are different; understandably some need more guidance than others. This may be the first official year our Independence has been so blatantly ignored and replaced with a bold statement of neo-colonialism.

Happy belated birthday, Jamaica! Hopefully, when you make 55, colonialism will be in the past.
