Dear Editor,
We need to recognise the magnitude of the competition Alia had to encounter in this white-dominated sport. It is quite heart-warming to see a black woman displaying such accomplishments in aquatics. I, for one, am very proud of her remarkable achievements in being the only person from the region to reach two Olympic finals in swimming. Alia has done her all for the people who supported her, and we are on her side all the way. The competition was very stiff, and we in our little space cannot comprehend what she had to encounter. She might be disappointed she could not have attained a stronger placement, but the world knows that she was hungry for victory. Don’t give up, Alia, and never listen to the naysayers who would want to put you down. To be truthful, most Jamaicans are still behind you and still wish you well. Brush yourself off and continue on your journey.
