Dear Editor,
Any spare food around?
I asked this question of a group of co-workers this week and they laughed because the question came off as a joke; but I was being serious. I needed a snack to go along with my peppermint tea.
As they laughed, one co-worker said, “Hey, put it on Facebook!”
The idea was not a bad one, but it led me to think further that the real question would be, “Hey, any spare money around?”
This is also a serious question as money is scarce to some but in abundance to others. I am not what Jamaicans call ‘bad mind’ or ‘red eye’, but rather a mere observer.
What I have observed in Jamaica is that there is a lot of spare money. I see this with type of cars, the clothes and the lifestyle. A budding entrepreneur like me could do with some investment with the possibility of rewarding investors with favourable returns. It would be a gamble by investing in me but, as I mentioned earlier, it would be spare money; the type of money you are willing to lose.
I am not alone; there are budding entrepreneurs all over Jamaica. I recently learned about Mahalia Gordon, the owner of MahGord’s ‘Everybody’s Natural Blend”, I purchased her natural seasoning after smelling an empty bottle on a co-worker’s desk. When I asked why she had this empty bottle she explained that Gordon wanted them to reuse and redistribute products. She had high praises for this young lady’s product and I was impressed by just the smell. This is a past student of Glenmuir High School who decided to launch her own business, follow her passion, take the risk and, as Jamaicans, would say ‘try a ting’.
If I had the spare money I would invest in a business like this. It is just like that popular show on cable television called
Shark Tank, where people with ‘spare money’ listen to business proposals and reject or invest in these ideas. Whenever I watch this programme I most times know what would be a good investment. But then I always remember I do not have the spare money.
Jamaica, aspiring entrepreneurs need some spare money!
