Dear Editor,

No accolade can be high enough for Elaine Thompson, Jamaica’s new 100-metre Olympic champion who beat the world’s top women in imperious fashion.

Elaine has been showing tremendous potential and amazing speed over the past two years. She learnt her craft well, training with the inimitable Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, under the guidance of coach Stephen Francis. And on Saturday night she brought it all and left everything on the track. It was a superlative victory, given the quality of the contestants in the final. Truly an amazing achievement!

And what a brave race Shelly-Ann ran. I don’t know if I missed it, but none of the commentators on the channel I was watching mentioned her obvious distress after her winning run in her semi-final race. She was limping so badly, I am not sure how they missed it and, leading up to the final, none of them mentioned it. A lesser mortal might have even toyed with the idea of withdrawing, but not Shelly-Ann. She went out and ran her heart out — the heart of a champion. Did I hear someone say “the brave may fall, but never yield”?

So let’s celebrate two champions — the unbeatable on the night, Elaine Thompson, and the brave and indomitable Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
