Dear Editor,
My visits to Jamaica over the last few years are due to the transition of my relatives. I am the last of 15, and I am not a kid anymore, so they are moving on. But every time I make the trip from Sangster International Airport to St Elizabeth I feel like I’m about to attend my own funeral. By the way, I gave up driving on Jamaican roads years ago. I cannot compete with the trenches and bad drivers. How does one explain a motorist overtaking three vehicles, mine included, around a curve, only to narrowly escape the oncoming vehicle? I don’t know if it’s already being done, but plainclothes cops should be riding in some of those passenger vehicles to issue summonses immediately for reckless driving.
The road through Westmoreland into St Elizabeth, including Holland Bamboo — a supposed tourist attraction — is a disgrace. What was the fight all about between Evon Redman and Raymond Pryce regarding representation in St Elizabeth, when Santa Cruz is still in the same deplorable condition it has been in for years? When it rains, there is flooding and no one dares to cross it on foot.
I strongly urge the Government not to allow the construction of the proposed coal-fired plant at Nain, nor anywhere else in Jamaica. The effect on people and the environment will be devastating. Every civilised country is moving away from coal. Let’s not be penny wise and pound foolish. Letting the construction go ahead would be just damned!
