Dear Editor,

There has to be a way for the people of Jamaica to say thanks to the great one who brought them overwhelming joy and who, at the same time, ignited pride in ourselves as Jamaicans through his achievements. There must be a place where all who pass that way will remember his glory — a short, sweet period of glory when all Jamaicans were united in one love.

I wrote previously about Half-Way-Tree as a special place in the life of Jamaica — a place where “Up Town” meets “Downtown”, and the two become one for great happenings; this time as the pantheon for sports where thousands gather in clamorous acclamation for their heroes.

Not only did the spirit of Sherwood Content and Norbrook meet at Half-Way-Tree for all to see greatness, the meetings went international when the ambassador brought Beijing, London, and Rio together at Half-Way-Tree for the hero’s triple-three run. Although the games are over, the spirit of oneness should continue.

A journalist wrote she would not miss the opportunity to be at Half-Way-Tree with the masses to see history being made by triple-three greatness at Rio — locking down Jamaica and most of the civilised world, including the mega-busy John F Kennedy International Airport in New York. Did you hear the hero ‘big up’ Half-Way-Tree to the world, sending greetings to those he holds dear?

Half-Way-Tree has to be the place where the nation shows appreciation to our heroes in sports. Erect a statue at Half-Way-Tree for Ambassador Usain Bolt, pointing the way forward for Jamaicans to the world, with success as the only destiny. Memorialise magnificence, uplift Jamaica, build a shrine where people will kneel in humble admiration and in gratitude; a place where Jamaicans are united in one love, with one aim and one destiny.
