Sutton Street court needs serious attention

Dear Editor,

People attending the Sutton Street Court are treated like trash and it is time that this treatment comes to an end.

I am 58 years of age. On September 2, 2016 I went to this court due to a summons that I was issued. I got there at 9:45 am. My case was scheduled for Court 1. The place was crowded with people who had their cases on the same day.

The majority of us had to stand from 9:45am, when I got there, until 1:45 pm when my case was called up. Many of us were senior citizens and it did not make any difference. Some people had to sit on the steps of the stairways to avoid the long standing.

My God, what kind of country is this! Why can’t we do some basic things properly? Why schedule so many cases on a particular day when it is clear that adequate seats are not available for people to sit on.

If there are benches that can seat 30 individuals, why ask 200 people to come and suffer the indignity of standing for four hours before they are invited into the courtroom to answer to the judge? This is a national disgrace! And it once again points to the poor stewardship.

I must point fingers at Chief Justice Zaila McCalla. And the clerk of court is just as bad to administer a system in which so many people are brought to court for one day under the circumstances.

Why not get more benches or seats for 200 people if that is the mumber of people the judge can see in a day? Food For The Poor can probably help in getting seating. Ask them and let them say that they can’t help, but don’t continue to let us suffer anymore.

A frustrated senior citizen
