Is Portia just press-shy?

Dear Editor,

The People’s National Party (PNP) is publicly imploding, not unlike what happened to the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) some years ago.

The difference is that the JLP’s public destruction, and the various factions and gangs that formed, was to remove a leader, Edward Seaga, whose time had come, but who held on to power stubbornly. In the case of the PNP’s Portia Simpson Miller, her time has also passed, but the party’s image is being marred by allegations of corrupt campaign contributions.

She certainly does not want to leave the stage ingloriously, with her image tarnished, her legacy soiled, and knowledge that our first female leader failed. The same thing could be said of President Barack Obama; as the first African-American to hold that office, the burden to perform exceptionally has been his cross to carry.

Simpson Miller finds herself a victim of a generation gap, especially when it comes to social media, much like Dorothy Lightbourne who didn’t watch the news because it was too “disturbing” and couldn’t send a simple e-mail. Hillary Clinton suffers the same weaknes: she cannot tell the difference between classified and unclassified information and hasn’t given a press conference in more than 270 days.

Recently, in front of thousands of loyal PNP supporters, she awoke from her lethargic, comatose slumber and the old “Sister P” re-emerged — but it is the same Sister P who said that Jennifer Edwards didn’t herself set the fire at the Riverton dump and therefore bore no responsibility.

It’s seems that as long as Simpson Miller is in front of the press she suffers a breakdown. But place her in front of her party supporters and she is again transformed into this charismatic speaker. Unfortunately, D K Duncan, Sandra Falconer or Robert Pickersgill cannot continue to shield her. Like the comments she made about removing Queen Elizabeth II, “Time come”, Portia. You promised to pass the baton to a much younger leader.

Sorry, Dr Peter Phillips, unfortunately, your time has also passed.
