Police work stress was no secret

Dear Editor,

The crime situation in downright depressing. Equally disgusting is the stance that some members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force seem to be taking in blaming the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) for “tying up their hands”.

Of course, these are only the incompetent cops who think policing is to go into any situation with guns blazing, then make up stories about shoot-outs. Lazy wimps, too, blaming INDECOM, so as not to do their jobs effectively.

INDECOM investigates police infractions, not police operations — big difference! So please explain why the fear, unless they themselves are wrongdoers.

Remember, too, that these same cops were just as fearful, lazy, dysfunctional, and incompetent before INDECOM, and that they are the reason we needed INDECOM in the first place. We wouldn’t need an ‘overseer’ if a concern about the modus operandi of officers did not exist.

Don’t make excuses for their follies when they approach their job nonchalantly, and sometimes retaliatorily, blaming it on the above factors. How many other jobs offer weapons for protection, bullet-proof vests, all the help they need, with radio backup? They, like others, had the opportunity not to enlist. And since they opted to join, they should show professionalism, competence, and abide by the standards. I so dislike people that complain about their lot in life when they were the ones who chose it. Let them try to do some jobs I had!

The amount of pay, stress and consequences were not held secret when the took the job. They chose to sign up for such, so they went in with their eyes open to the problems, or maybe they’re not qualified for much else.
