Dear Editor,
I have seen many, many promos in which they refer to Montego Bay as the place to relax and enjoy a vacation. The name has become synonymous with tranquility, being extremely happy, peaceful and picturesque.
This island on a whole is a country of unmatched beauty. Why are we systematically destroying it? Since Independence we have been shooting ourselves in the foot over and over again, and one of these days we are going to shoot ourselves in the head.
We came perilously close to doing so with the Tivoli Gardens operation in 2010. We chose a leader who had ranted and raved against garrison-type politics, but was seemingly OK with the mother of all garrisons.
As the saying goes: “Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.”
We cannot thrust the security ministry upon a reluctant Robert Montague with the expectation that he will perform creditably. Prime Minister Andrew Holness, I beg you, lift this heavy burden from this reluctant warrior’s shoulders. Delroy Chuck seems the more ideal person to be our next minister of national security; he talks the talk, let him walk the talk.
In July 2013, Chuck said that the zero-tolerance approach taken towards crime and violence by Singaporean authorities have benefited that country. Offences such as drug trafficking and armed robbery bring a mandatory death sentence. More than 400 people were executed in Singapore, mostly for drug trafficking, between 1991 and 2004. Singapore recorded 19 murders in 2011 and 16 in 2012.
In Jamaica reports said: “We are still killing more than 1,000 Jamaicans every year. So far, this year, we have recorded in excess of 500 murders and we are just at mid-year. It means we are killing over 80 citizens per month, or about 20 per week.” In most countries, this would be a national disgrace and a scandal that demands drastic actions. But it seems this high level of killing has become the norm, and most Jamaicans, including our leaders, no longer feel the strong sense of disgust, intolerance and indignation at the daily dose of killings, unless it is some close relative or friend, or some important personnel.
We have to act fast! Our very survival depends on it.
The Americans are establishing a branch of the Federal Bureau of Investigation here because it is in their interest to stop lottery scamming especially. The British want to build a prison here and have started the extradition of known felons because it is in their interest to do so. We have to act in our own interest, regardless of their opinions or the pressure they apply to us. We must act to survive.
