Kudos to the Gov’t

Dear Editor,

I must give credit to the Government of the day, led by the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), for the wonderful way it has galvanised, organised, mobilised, and motivated the arms of government and civil society in preparing for the onslaught of Hurricane Matthew.

The foremost responsibility of any government is the security of its citizens. Security means protection of life and property, protection from food shortages, providing good health care, among the many other things. Since the impending storm we have witnessed a massive mobilisation of all sectors in these areas.

No one can blame the Andrew Holness-led Administration for a lack of leadership in this area, or not operating as a responsible Government. The presence was seen on the ground, through the various government agencies and volunteers, through the numerous shelters, and felt through the many print and electronic houses. The nation was well informed about Matthew and as many things related to it. This was all bolstered by the work of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and Jamaica Defence Force.

If they, the JLP, continue to meet the needs of the people, and being a vanguard of the people, then it will be hard to get them out of power in the coming years.

Nothing is more committed to memory than a helping hand in the time of need and trouble.

Desmond McKenzie, minister of local government, must be commended for his hard and unselfish work to the nation. He could be seen on the ground and on national radio and television giving us updates on matters that concern us the people.

A lot of Jamaicans are happy that Matthew did not impact us, but if it did, we are happy that we have a hard-working Government out there working for us.
