Dear Editor,
This is an open letter to Senior Superintendent Calvin Allen, head of the highway and traffic divisions:
According to reports made at a press conference on July 11, 2016 at the Office of the Police Commissioner in St Andrew, road fatalities have decreased when compared to the similar period last year. While I commend your office on the work that has been done to curtail the number of fatalities, a lot more can and needs to be done to maintain discipline and safety on our roads.
I write with particular reference to the Red Hills and Molynes roads which I travel daily, sometimes twice — in the morning and afternoon. The level of indiscipline exhibited along these corridors is frightening and disheartening. Each day I sit in my vehicle and observe drivers disregard basic road rules. There is improper overtaking, driving on the opposite side of the road, and even driving on the sidewalk. Oftentimes the primary culprits are taxis and buses, some of which are surely operating illegally.
I am imploring you and your team to make your presence felt on these corridors. There is a tragedy waiting to happen and I would not want us to wait until this occurs before strategic and definitive action is taken to rid the road of individuals who do not care for themselves and other road users.
I look forward to seeing your officers on the road.
