Dear Editor,
The Khajeel Mais case, although closed in the courts of justice, still lingers in our thoughts. And there are some salient facts, regardless of anyone’s current feelings, that still need to be considered.
It’s a fact that Mais was killed by a bullet fired by someone.
The reason for the firing of the bullet is inferred to be “road rage”, caused when the taxi hit a private motor vehicle.
Since we know that the youngster is dead as a result of a bullet fired at a vehicle due to an incident, then the owner, operator, driver, person in the vehicle that was hit must be found and questioned.
The State is responsible for the collection of facts pertaining to circumstances like this, especially when it involves the killing of someone. It appears that they did not collect the facts.
The State, by its own admission, has indicated that it was unable to do the following:
1) Get the gun that fired the bullet that killed Mais.
2) Get the private vehicle that was involved in the accident.
3) Get the driver, owner, passenger of the vehicle to swab hands for evidence of having fired a gun to determine who might have fired at the taxi at the time.
The circumstances around this case sound all too familiar to the case of slave masters who take out their anger on slaves who damage their property. The same slave masters would commit horrific acts against human beings because they are aggrieved. So it seems to me that we, who built the nation to be what it is, are still locked firmly in the cargo hold of the slave empire and its legacy.
We hope that justice is served one day soon. The facts of this case remain that Mais was killed by a gun fired by a person aggrieved by damage to their property.
