Dear Editor,
I sincerely agree with Robert Dalley, who wrote an incisive newspaper letter published in the October 21, 2016 edition of the
Jamaica Observer, suggesting to Finance Minister Audley Shaw that when current Customs Commissioner Richard Reece’s contract ended on October 31, 2016 that former Contractor General Greg Christie be appointed commissioner.
If one takes an informed look at Christie’s record as contractor general, he performed with the highest levels of integrity, probity and meticulousness and, without a doubt, did a commendable job throughout his tenure. He took his job seriously and was a hard-working, dedicated and professional contractor general who feared no one. This made him extensively successful in the job.
Greg Christie’s impressive tenure as contractor general makes him the correct person to be appointed the country’s next customs commissioner and he would be a no-nonsense and successful one.
Christie could help to clean up the corruption reported to exist within Customs operations. His investigative and probing skills have been fine-tuned by serving as contractor general. The Customs agency in Jamaica requires a committed, honourable and firm commissioner who will positively and structurally reform the entire structure, increase the performance levels of Customs officers, and investigate and weed out the significant amounts of pollution that exists.
May I extend my commendations to Christie on his excellent service to this country as contractor general. He is an outstanding and respectable public servant of integrity.
